Old news articles about Keira and also site updates. For the latest news, see the front page Stories from 2002 can be found in the 2002 Archive

Keira tipped by Telegraph
14th January

There was a nice gushing piece about Keira in The Daily Telegraph(UK) titled 'Who will be the biggest star?' comparing Keira with Scarlett Johansson. Keira features along the top banner "Keira Knightley, 19 (sic), an exquisite English rose".

Its a good sign that she is definately entering the national consciousness and will no doubt shortly be one of Britain's biggest stars. She is compared to Dame Judi Dench etc. but as it says in the article:

Being a good actor may get you a long way in the movies, but being irresistible will get you a whole lot further.... in terms of the intangible allure that transforms the luvvie with prospects into a stone-cold movie star, there has been no one in this countryto match her for decades.

Lancelot loses out on Keira
6th January

Ioan Gruffudd has told the BBC how 'gutted' he was at the lack of love scenes between his Lancelot and Keira's Guinevere in the new King Arthur movie. He says:

"Unfortunately, as in the old legend, there isn't an affair between Lancelot and Guinevere, the relationship is between Arthur [played by Clive Owen] and Guinevere [played by Knightley], I'm gutted about that."

In other news, the Keira-loving Empire Magazine has opened up the voting for the 2004 awards - the category for Best British Actress has to be a shoo-in for Keira. She is also nominated in the Best Scene award for her verbal sparring with Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. You can vote here

Keira has featured in number of end-of-year reports as a star to watch, notably Newsweek's gushing spread for their recent Who's Next issue, also as New Face of the Year here

King Arthur Trailer Online
27th December

The trailer for King Arthur is now online at the official King Arthur Site. You can view a selection of stills at the new King Arthur Page on this site.

Pirates sells lots
19th December

Pirates Of The Carribean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl has sold 11 million DVD and VHS units in its first week of sales which has made the people over at Disney understandably happy. It has become the largest opening week live-action home entertainment title in history.

News Roundup
19th December

- Keira has been named the top breakout star in a poll run by Entertainment Weekly

- Teen Hollywood reports that Keira has collected a few bruises and scrapes from her physical role in King Arthur. Jerry Bruckheimer is quoted as saying "She knows how to shoot a bow and arrow, she can handle a sword, she can ride a horse, she can do just about anything"

- Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is rumoured to begin shooting in Jan 2005

Pirates of the Caribbean DVD release
2nd December

Pirates of the Caribbean is released today, those wags at Buena Vista chose to launch the DVD in a Tall Ship off Florida on Monday

Best part is the guest list which promised: pirates, wenches, buccaneers, drivel swiggers, powder monkeys, bilge rats, rum runners, and scurvy dogs.

I've put in an order for a dozen powder monkeys - I'm going to race them

In other news, Bend it like Beckham was intially going to feature a lesbian love story between Parminder and Keira. According to a friend of the director, Gurinder Chadha, this was changed to avoid possibly offending the audience. What could have been...

News Roundup
21st November

- Buoyed by the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, the film is tipped to spawn two sequels which could be shot back-2-back, a technique which worked well for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

- Keira was encouraged to have her belly button pierced at the age of 13 by her mother and according to Elle, this was one of the reasons Richard Curtis cast her in Love Actually, having seen her piercing in Bend it Like Beckham

- Keira came second in the acting category of handbag.com's annual awards. BAFTA winner Julie Walters came first

Love Actually Premiere
17th November

The Love Actually premiere was held in Leicester square last night and once again the stars were out in force ( hard not to be given the size of the cast. ) Shining amongst them was Keira in a black number reminiscent of the POTC premiere earlier this year. More photos can be found in the photo gallery

Empire Magazine deserve special plaudits for pushing the boat out on this one, with a special premiere feature. Strangely enough the premiere also gave the co-stars a chance to meet each other (?!) - Keira told the BBC:

"This is the first time we've all been together I think, and having my picture taken with Hugh Grant - that was the longest time I've ever spent with him and it was rather fabulous,"

Love Actually on Release
12th November

Love Actually made an impressive debut on a limited release over the weekend making number 6 with a take of $6.6m on 576 screens. The average of $11k was only trumped by Matrix Revolutions. You could wait for the 5 minute abridged version which only features Keira's sub-plot, but you might as well watch the whole thing, Hugh Grant's a very funny man

How do you know when you have arrived in the World of Celebrity? - you feature in Hello magazine of course. Keira has her own quiz :)

Love Actually Premiere
5th November

Love Actually premieres on the 6th of November at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan but there is no sign of Keira on the guest list! Presuming filming commitments are getting in the way we are offered the rest of the cast by way of compensation Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Martine McCutcheon, Rowan Atkinson, Thomas Sangster, Claudia Schiffer, Shannon Elizabeth, Olivia Olson and January Jones

Kelly Clarkson will also put in an appearance as she features on the soundtrack along with some typically slushy tracks (Dido - here with me , The Calling - Wherever you will go, The Beach Boys - God Only Knows ). Unfortunately no mention of Girls Aloud who are releasing 'Jump (for my love)' as the lead single: maybe if they told them there would be free lollipops they would have gone.

Keira most eligible
4th November

Keira has been named 'most eligible female' in Tatler magazine (alongside Orlando Bloom who was most eligible male) eligible in this instance means unmarried. The shopping list for rich singletons described her as the "brightest young thing of her generation, with long limbs and fine features" much like a horse really.

Meantime her stock is going up with another film project in the pipeline. She is being mentioned in connection with the latest film by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) about a girl who dresses up as a man to fight in the American Civil War - rumours courtesy of comingsoon.net

Love Actually
29th October

In preparation for the release of Love Actually, the official site has gone live. All of the sub-plots are catered for, but you'll only be interested in the Love Unspoken box :). A few caps from the site can be found in the photos section

The UK premiere is on the 16th November in Leicester Square (in aid of Comic Relief), ahead of general release, sneak previews are happening this weekend. Keira is only one of an ensemble cast so screen time may be limited- she says:

"It is so beautifully written, Richard's really excelled himself on this one. It's a challenge to tell the entire story in a few scenes - I've never really come across something like this before. And it's been a pleasure to play."

Round Up
12th October

Its gone a little quiet on the Keira front recently- she has been keeping a lower profile 'between movies'. Still gives a chance to tinker with header (above)

In a quick round up, Teen Hollywood can always be relied on for making a story out of a quote, so Keira is both worried about losing her looks and worried about losing her career. Luckily George Clooney who is producing her in The Jacket (see below) has no such worries, The Daily Star quotes him saying "I thought she was fantastic in Pirates Of The Caribbean. She's just a movie star. You know, it's an intangible that you're never really able to describe."

Love Actually is All Around
22nd September

Well, at least that's what it feels like. Love Actually is loads of press at the moment and looks set to be one of the biggest films of this Christmas. There are a couple more pictures of Keira in the photos section and don't forget to check out the trailer below.

A few minor changes around the site, and the forums have been given a little more room to breathe with a smaller header

Clooney to Teach American Accent
16th September

George Clooney has offered to help Keira perfect her American accent in 'The Jacket' which he will be co-producing with Steven Soderburgh. George told the Sun (UK):

"I have long been an admirer of Keira. I’m looking forward to working together."

"I’m sure she’ll have no trouble, but I have offered to help her with her drawl. Perhaps one day I’ll need her for English lessons."

15th September
Love Actually

You know Christmas is coming when the trails for the 'holiday' season start kicking in. Still, in this case it can be excused because the film in question is Love Actually.

Love Actually Trailer

It's already appearing in Cinemas, but you can now view it online here

There are also a couple of extra stills in the photo gallery

Keira in "The Jacket"
11th September

Clearly in demand, Keira has signed up for a new project. "The Jacket" is an independent production starring Adrien Brody set around a soldier convicted for murder who believes he is travelling through time to find his true love.

Keira will even have to put on an American accent for the role! Shooting will begin in the UK in January somewhere after King Arthur and before Tulip Fever.

Speaking of King Arthur, The Sun (UK) carried pictures on Wednesday of Keira practicing her fight technique yesterday. A warning for the (currently) 7 girls who are above her on the sexiest 100 (below) VOTE!

We know it, but it is about time the rest of the world did:

Keira to be the richest Brit?
1st September

Exclusive to every paper today was the 2020 Rich List, a list of those under-20 year olds who were likely to be raking it in come the year 2020.

Top female is Keira Knightley at number 2 who has been predicted to earn around £50m based on emulating Catherine Zeta Jones. The whole list can be found here

Thanks to everyone who has been uploading fan pics in the fan pictures section been away from the site for a bit but have now caught up on the backlog. Also made a few changes to make the section load faster and display the wallpaper sizes.

There were also some tasty rumours going around that Keira was being lined up to be the next Bond girl, these have now been disproved but one can't help think of what could have been

More Love, Actually
14th August

There is a new shot of Love Actually in the photo section, more can be found on ComingSoon.net of Keira's co-stars

As if Keira didn't already have enough films on her plate, she is also tipped for a role in Zorro 2 if Catherine Zeta Jones doesn't fancy it. Her fighting in Pirates has obviously impressed the right people.

Love, Actually
11th August

Keira's new movie 'Love Actually' is to receive a work-in-progress debut at the Toronto Film Festival according to the Beeb. The film has been written by Richard Curtis who has been behind the camera for other top romantic comedies such as 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Notting Hill'

Speaking of 'love' , Teen Tabloid - teenhollywood.com reports that Keira will shoot a love scene with Jim Broadbent in Tulip Fever (see below.) Broadbent is reported to be 'very much looking forward to joining her on set next year' - you couldn't make it up

Fan Section
7th August

The Fan Pictures section is now up. Pop along to the new page for the best in wallpapers and other fan art. Even better, you can vote on the submissions and even add your own.

In other Keira news, Bend It Like Beckham returned to the US top ten over the weekend, blasting in at number 7 on the strength of a general release combined with extra marketing.

Tulip Fever, which Keira is due to start filming in April, has added oscar winner Jim Broadbent to the cast. He joins Jude Law in the Tom Stoppard screenplay of the novel by Deborah Moggach

Babelicious
2nd August

The fun-loving guys over at Internet Movie Database have run a poll to find the most 'babelicious movie babe' this year. The winner was, of course, Keira Knightley taking 23% of the vote and beating Monica Bellucci into 2nd place.

The full story can be read here and to top it off, they FINALLY got her Date of Birth changed to 1985!

Keira in Diamond
30th July

Keira has taken a couple of days off filming to shoot some photos for Asprey the Jewellers. She is apparently the new face of Asprey, which must be a bit like being the face of Estee Lauder but instead of getting a bunch of lip gloss you get £$£'s of rocks.

The story at Vogue reads more like a press release than an article but at least she's endorsing something of quality not some brand of cola

For those looking for something to do on Friday in the US, don't forget that Bend it like Beckham goes on general release so could be appearing in a multiplex near you. Apparently trailers now refer to 'Keira Knightley' star of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' so they are obviously trying to trade off her rising stardom.

Keep track of Keira
26th July

Newly opened is the Events Page. Here you can keep track of what Keira will be doing and where she will be appearing in the next few months. Please add any extra items you know about

Also added to the Photo Gallery are some shots from Empire Magazine which features Keira on the front cover as part of their 'Young, Gifted and British' feature along with Orlando Bloom. The magazine is out next month.

Jurassic Park 4
21st July

There were rumours a while back but it has now been confirmed that Keira is also lined up for a leading role in Jurassic Park 4. Apparently Sam Neil, her co-star in Dr. Zhivago put in a good word for her. Nice Man

Meantime, Bend it Like Beckham has won Best Sports Movie at the ESPN awards and goes on General Release from the 1st August so all you country folk shouldn't have to trek into the big bad city to see it

BTW the hit counter has broken last count was over 200,000 page views - thanks to everyone who is helping to make this site a success

Keira on Elle Magazine
16th July

Keira is obviously turning into a bit of a style icon with another cover appearance, this time on Elle Magazine (UK). A couple of pictures have found their way into the magazine gallery

In other news, plans are afoot for a sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl already. (the subtitle was supposedly added to leave the way open for a sequel) The Hollywood Reporter reports that Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have all signed up for a sequel as well as producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski

Thanks for all the e-mails which are flooding in, bit behind in answering them but the site has done over 100,000 hits this month and we are only half way through! As you can imagine things are very busy

Keira Mania
15th July

The UK press is reporting that the crowd last night went mad for Keira so her ascendency to film star is almost complete. Despite her previous tomboy image, she was reported wearing £500,000 worth of Asprey diamonds and a black Alexander McQueen corset to the premiere.

There are a couple more pics are in the Pirates of the Caribbean Section

Also, for those having problems keeping up with her TV appearances, there are articles on her recent appearances on Entertainment Tonight and Extra TV

European Premiere
14th July

The UK / European premiere for Pirates took place today in London's Leicester Square. Johnny didn't make it but there were more than enough screams for Orlando Bloom.

Keira was sporting a fetching Goth look suggesting she is going to be a dark-haired Guinevere in the currently-shooting King Arthur. A couple of pics are in the Pirates of the Caribbean Section

Pirates hits number 1
13th July

Pirates sailed (sorry) into the number 1 spot in the US this weekend taking $46.4 million taking precisely twice as much as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's

Overall it has taken $70 million since release which is half-way to funding the $140m it took to create it.

In other news, Dr. Zhivago has now been pencilled in for a November screening on PBS and to round off a good Autumn, Bend it Like Beckham is being released on DVD on the 30th of September.

Keira to star with Jude Law?
10th July

The dust is only just settling on the release of Pirates and already film projects are lining up for Keira. She is in discussions to star in a Dreamworks/Miramax film based on the Tulip 'bubble' of 17th century Amsterdam

Hollywood Reporter has filming starting in April, the film is to be based on 'Tulip Fever' by Deborah Moggach

Pirates of the Caribbean on Release
9th July

Pirates of the Caribbean is on General Release is the US so go out and watch it and post your thoughts in the forum

The reviews are coming flooding in and are, on the whole very good - if you can stomach a batting average of two corny pirate puns per paragraph.

The BBC kicks off proceedings with 'Flawed pirates still swashbuckling fun'

The Miami Herald leads with the incomprehensible 'Yaaarrgh! 'Pirates' walks, talks the plank' expect to see this line appearing in press magazines.

"Pirates of the Caribbean is a rollicking, jumbo-sized swashbuckler, awash in sword fights, cursed treasures, plank walkings and hurtling cannonballs."

Teen Hollywood gushes over the male stars but also has a few kind words for Keira

"Keira Knightley is extremely feminine but athletic enough to ditch the corset and fluffy dresses, grab a pair of pants and rescue some guys with gusto!"

... but of course, it's your reviews which count : ) ... forums this way...

Pirates of the Caribbean Reviews
7th July

Only a couple of days until general release and the reviews for Pirates are starting to come in.

First up is Time magazine which calls it 'A Rollickingly Entertaining Ride' offering these thoughts about Keira:

"Knightley, just 19(sic) when the film was shot, radiates a mature fire through her fresh, patrician beauty."

More here

USA Today gets extra kudos for getting her age right and also running this profile of Keira. There is a good quote from Jerry Bruckheimar:

"It was difficult to find a young actress who had the strength and the acting chops to carry a role where she at times dominates older men," Bruckheimer says. "Just the way she read the role, there was honesty and believability that she was actually playing the part. She bosses the guys around and takes over."

Screen Daily focuses on Johnny Depp but on the whole give the film an upbeat review

And for those UK fans who have to endure a month's wait for general release, you can comfort yourself by entering Empire Online's competition to win tickets to the UK premiere in a week's time. Click here for more details.
